Photography with meaning

In the age of the 'Selfie' New York Photographer Richard Renaldi has been working on a series of photographs that involve approaching, and asking complete strangers to physically interact while posing together for a portrait. Working on the street with a large format eight-by-ten-inch view camera, Renaldi encounters the subjects for his photographs in towns and cities all over the United States. He pairs them up and invites them to pose together, intimately, in ways that people are usually taught to reserve for their close friends and loved ones. Have a look at this amazing project here

The struggle..

Any creative. Be they an artist, writer or dare I say even a photographer, I am sure could relate to this video. Zack Arias is one of my favourite photographers. I love his work, but even more I love his style, his philosophy on photography. I like that he admits to his doubts and anxieties as an artist. When I find myself struggling photographically I often give his video another watch. Give it a watch, you just might find an interesting perspective...

Cairns Bhutanese Community Fashion Show

Had the fantastic opportunity and experience today of photographing the Cairns Bhutanese Community fashion show. The traditional dress on display was really a sight to see. The most amazing colours and designs were on show!

Thanks to the Cairns Bhutanese Community for asking me to photograph this show. Some of the most genuinely welcoming and friendly people around! Not to mention the amazing food! Thanks once again for the hospitality!

Getting camera fit...

So my exploration with the Fuji XT-10 continues. I am slowly but surely using the Fuji at every opportunity, and seeing how the little Fuji handles. Unfortunately, time constraints always make getting to locations a bit of a hassle most days.

I was coming back into Cairns from the North side just before sunset. I hadn't tried any sunset shooting with the Fuji as yet. I was interested in seeing the dynamic range and how far I could push the files if necessary. So I pulled over on the side of the highway and started seeing what I could do.

The following file is a single exposure as I wanted to see how hard I could push the shadows etc on the Fuji files. Not as good as my Nikon overall I would say, so I will have to be a little more careful on the exposure. But overall so far I am very happy with what the Fuji is capable of.

Niggling doubts...

cairns.night.blackandwhite

In a few months I am off to Japan for a few weeks. This is purely a personal photography trip for me. So, I decided to try a lighter alternative in regards to camera gear for this trip. So I picked up the wonderful little retro Fuji XT-10 (Check it out here) also the 18-55 and the 55-200 lenses. I am still undecided on the 14mm Wide angle lens and might rent this lens for the trip.

I love night photography, especially when travelling. I have tried out the body and lens combo during the day. (I have been so busy this has been limited to shooting from my balcony whilst having a morning coffee) I am happy that during daylight, the Fuji XT-10 will produce fantastic image quality for the trip. But...

The deal breaker is this "Will the XT-10 perform at night and for long exposure photography?".
I had to head down to my local shopping centre the other night. This was the first opportunity I had to try out a night time long exposure. OK, OK so it's not the greatest location or subject but it gave me an idea on whether the XT-10 will cut it for the trip.

Short answer...Yes! I was more than happy with the quality and clean files that resulted. Pack your stuff Fuji. You'll be heading home soon!
